Exhibition opening

From 6pm ARDE, Homage to reparation processes

Durational Performance by Daniela Medina Poch

Drawing inspiration from the cosmovision of several indigenous Andean-Amazonian communities, ARDE investigates nettle as a somatic technology. The artist sews a layer of fresh nettle leaves onto a military shirt that resembles the uniform shirt of the Colombian National Army. While the nettle gradually covers the military camouflage, the formic acid and histamine released by the plant enter the shirt and the her hand simultaneously, producing a prolonged stinging sensation that numbs the skin.

6.30pm warm welcome by Dr. Ute Müller-Tischler, Head of Department Art, History and Culture of Berlin-Mitte district administration, and Hannah Kruse and Laure Catugier, curators of the exhibition

7pm – 10pm music by ada & mia

Cool drinks will be available in the courtyard of the gallery.

Text

From September 30 to November 26, 2023, the Goldrausch Künstlerinnenprojekt will present recent works by 15 Berlin-based, international women* artists at galerie weisser elefant. With Goldrausch 2023 — on the edge of, the professionalization programme presents the final exhibition of its 33rd year. The group exhibition is a cooperation with the Department of Art, Culture and History of the Berlin-Mitte district and is curated by Laure Catugier and Hannah Kruse.

Under the title Goldrausch 2023 — on the edge of, the 15 participants of the Goldrausch Künstlerinnenprojekt present excerpts from their current practice. Among the media to be discovered are conceptual photography, analogue and digital experimental film, painting and drawing, performance, sound, sculpture and installation. The artists‘ central themes are human-made changes to our environment and the breaking up of linear narratives, of traditional visual worlds and stereotypes. They explore the boundaries – edges – of their media; along these edges, the exhibits invite reflection on social or ecological change, just as they encourage us to question existing systems and develop possibilities for transformation.

As a one-year professionalization course, the Goldrausch Künstlerinnenprojekt promotes outstanding artistic positions by women*. During the course, the participants focus on their professional development in a supportive community and, at the same time, show their work across different platforms to the public. Since 1989, this renowned professional development project – one of a kind in Germany – has been supporting women* artists in opening up their individual career paths and presenting their work to a wide-ranging audience.

Artist talks and a catalogue will accompany the exhibition.

Programm

Sunday, 15 October 2023

1pm – 2.30pm Performance „Confessionale“ by Viviana Druga (Goldrausch 2023). The performance will take place outside in the courtyard of the gallery.

An open confessional seat serves as the focal point facilitating discussions on traditional perceptions of culpability and redemption. Visitors are invited to make – or listen to – a confession. What is the contemporary significance of rituals? How is the sacred valued? What potential lies within the act of confessing? How can ‚confession,‘ when divorced from a patriarchal power structure, be reimagined and embraced?

3pm – 4.30pm Guided tour in the exhibition Goldrausch 2023 – on the edge of with Prof. Dr. Daniela Labra, curator and critic, and exhibiting artists: Anja Dornieden, Viviana Druga, Ximena Ferrer Pizarro, Daniela Medina Poch, Silja Yvette. In English language.

Sunday, 5 November 2023

2pm – 2.45pm Soundwalk with Bea Targosz (Goldrausch 2023). The meeting point is at 1.45pm in the courtyard of the gallery.

Sound walk with Bea Targosz

During the walk, we will experience the local sound environment and search for local sonic happenings. We will walk while listening with our bare ears, without technological extensions. We will explore the intersections between nature, technological infrastructure and architecture, searching for their audible traces. By examining our listening habits and skills, we will try to open up new perspectives on our environment.

3pm – 4.30pm Guided tour in the exhibition Goldrausch 2023 – on the edge of with Julia Meyer-Brehm, curator and art historian, and exhibiting artists: Janne Höltermann, Tiziana Krüger, Amelie Plümpe, Marie Rief, Bea Targosz. In German language.

4.45pm – 5pm Performance „Translator“ by Emma Wilson (Goldrausch 2023). The performance will take place outside in the gallery courtyard.

“Translator” explores questions of authorship, linking experiences of speaking and listening with those of eating and digestion. The movement of a computer-generated kefir grain is translated into words by an interpreter. Kefir grains are symbiotic collections of bacteria and yeasts that feed on sugars, digest them through fermentation and release carbon dioxide as a by-product. Like the body of the kefir grain, the text recited is a composite, resulting from a collage of cut-together quotes and intermingled authorships.
