I only work with lost and found – Goldrausch 2024

August 31–November 3, 2024

Belia Zanna Geetha Brückner, Isabelle Heske, Leonie Kellein, Jeanna Kolesova, Eva-Fiore Kovacovsky, Mizi Lee, Marei Loellmann, Gülsah Mursaloglu, Laura Nitsch, Egle Otto, Evelina Reiter, Noor us Sabah Saeed, Dior Thiam, Cora Wöllenstein, Sofiia Yesakova

Curated by Mona Hermann and Hannah Kruse

I only work with lost and found brings together recent works by the 15 artists participating in this year’s Goldrausch Künstlerinnenprojekt. Despite their diversity, these works are united by themes evoked in the exhibition’s title: cyclical processes of artistic work, as well as examinations of aesthetic, narrative, historical, and political ruptures and continuities.

Lost and found refers to the actions of unlearning and losing, to what is hidden or repressed, and at the same time hints at a wide range of possibilities for rediscovering, intervening, and reassembling. At the heart of many of the artworks on display is an engagement with found materials. The inherent qualities and histories of these materials offer opportunities to identify and rediscover buried knowledge, to critically examine memory and to imagine the future, or even to develop aesthetic or activist strategies within and beyond the field of art.

Work, the successful combination of artistic work and profession, is the core theme of the Goldrausch Künstlerinnenprojekt. The one-year program seeks to create equal visibility for the artistic positions of women.* Founded in 1989, it supports women* visual artists in acquiring professional know-how and in bringing their work to the public.

Team Goldrausch Team Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien The Kunstraum Kreuzberg is an institution of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district office.

The exhibition is a cooperation between the Goldrausch Künstlerinnenprojekt and the Department of Culture and History of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg District Office.

Medienpartner

Through the other Goldrausch artists and the project managers I gained a new vocabulary for my works and an awareness of new interpretations. I’ve become braver, use a broader range of artistic materials, and my technical know-how has been greatly enhanced. Art is still my primary means of support. It was very good to learn how multifaceted and diverse the career paths of visual artists can be. Because art doesn’t have to be unprofitable. I wouldn’t want to do without the network that developed through Goldrausch.

For me, the Goldrausch year was an absolute benefit: I’ve continued to collaborate with one of the women in my course since we got to know each other at Goldrausch. And it’s often nice to meet other ex-Goldrausch women – the experiences from that intensive year create extraordinary bonds. Obviously the course is time-consuming, but I always felt it was like having “fixed” office hours in which recurring things like compiling a portfolio, designing a website and so forth could be worked on, and moreover within a shared professional and collegial framework.

Goldrausch was very important for my self-conception as an artist. My artistic career was going through a transition phase when I participated in the Goldrausch programme. The cohesive group in which I’d done all my previous work was in the process of dissolving. The prospect of realizing projects alone was a particular challenge for me. Through my participation, I gained the self-confidence to initiate projects independently, to carry them out, and to assert my own position as an artist.
