General information

What is it about?

Since 1989, the Goldrausch Künstlerinnenprojekt has been offering a one-year, practice-oriented training program for visual artists. The feminist program promotes gender equality in the arts and aims to support women artists and FLINTA individuals in starting a professional artistic career.

Do I have to pay a fee to participate?

No, participation in the program is free of charge. The project is funded by the European Union (European Social Fund Plus) and the State of Berlin.

Will I receive financial support during the program?

The program does not provide direct financial support or honoraria for participants. It is an educational scholarship. Funding covers all course-related expenses. The course schedule is arranged so that parallel employment is generally possible.

How long does the program last?

The program lasts 12 months (end of January to December).

Target Group

Who can apply?

All visual artists with a completed degree or equivalent practical experience who are based in Berlin and want to establish themselves professionally in the art field. The program is open to all FLINTA individuals (women, lesbians, inter*, non-binary, trans*, and agender persons). There is no age limit.

Can I apply if I am still studying?

The Goldrausch program is specifically aimed at artists who have already completed their studies. The goal is to support graduates in entering the professional art world and establishing themselves in the long term. Proof of graduation is not required.

Is a university degree necessary?

The GoldrauschKünstlerinnenprojekt targets visual artists after completing their education—regardless of how long ago this was—as well as self-taught artists. It is important that participants already have some practical experience. However, most participants have a formal degree.

Are certain artistic disciplines favoured during the selection process?

No. The program is open to all artists working in any field of contemporary art, regardless of discipline or medium (e.g., painting, video, performance, sculpture, photography, digital art). A good way to get a sense of the range and focus of past scholarship recipients is to look at the work of our alumnae.

Do I have to live in Berlin?

Yes. A main residence in Berlin is required to participate. This is both for funding requirements (state residency support) and practical reasons: seminars, networking events, studio visits, and other program activities take place exclusively in Berlin, and participation is time-intensive.

In the first application round, Berlin registration is not yet required. Proof of main residence must be provided before the program begins. We are aware of the challenging housing situation in Berlin; nonetheless, presence in the city is necessary for the duration of the program.

Do I need to speak German or English?

Basic knowledge of both German and English is required. The program is bilingual (German/English). No formal language certificate is needed; applicants assess their own proficiency. Each year, many different mother tongues are represented in the course, and learning to work with this linguistic diversity is part of the program.

Application process

How can I apply?

Starting in 2025, applications are submitted exclusively online via an application form.
The application period is from July 1 to September 15. Late applications cannot be considered. Legal recourse is excluded.

We recommend completing the form early and preparing all documents in advance. Submitting on the last day may be problematic due to technical delays. Timely submission is the responsibility of the applicants.

Which documents are required?

We request a portfolio, a CV, a motivation letter, and an artist statement. The detailed list can be found here.

Is there a text limit?

There are no strict length requirements for the texts. Our recommendations are:
– CV: 1,000 to 5,000 characters
– Motivation letter: max. 1,500 characters
– Artist statement: max. 800 characters

Which file formats are allowed?

All documents should be submitted as PDFs. You can check the requirements on this page.

Is it possible to submit my motivation letter in a different format?

To make it easier for all applicants, including those with disabilities, to apply, you can submit your letter of motivation or artist statement as an audio or video file (maximum 1 minute long) instead. Please inform us in advance by emailing bewerbung@goldrausch.org.

Can I reapply if I have been rejected before?

Yes! Reapplications are welcome. Please present your current artistic practice in your portfolio. Each jury has different focuses and views applications from a fresh perspective.

Process & Selection

What happens after submission?

After the application deadline, each submission is reviewed by an external expert jury. The selection process has two stages:
– Pre-selection based on submitted documents
– Invitation of selected applicants to small group interviews

All applicants will be informed of the results by email by December at the latest. Please refrain from individual inquiries during the selection process.

Who selects the participants?

Selection is made by a rotating external expert jury, consisting of curators, art critics, theorists, and artists, including at least one alumna of the program. Examples of past jurors can be found on our website.

What are the selection criteria?

The decisive factors are that the artistic work demonstrates professionalism, maturity, and high quality, and that the application is coherent and convincing. Participation in the Goldrausch program should be a logical and beneficial extension of previous artistic practice.

How many spots are there?

There are 15 spots per year in the program.

Course Details

What are the course times?

Weekly courses take place on two fixed days: Thursday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Additionally, 3–4 intensive weeks are scheduled throughout the year, during which courses may occur on other weekdays. Individual coaching and appointments are arranged outside regular course days.

Is the program compatible with children and care responsibilities?

Yes, the program is designed to be family-friendly and compatible with care responsibilities. Fixed course times allow participation even with caregiving duties, e.g., for children. Course breaks follow Berlin school holidays, though they may not completely align. The summer break lasts four weeks during the Berlin school holidays. Intensive weeks are announced early, allowing individual planning. Nursing or short breaks can be accommodated in a quiet room if needed.

Where do the courses take place?

Most courses take place in Berlin-Lichtenberg in person.
